Relief from Brutal Winter

Winter has unfolded here in the Denver Metro area unlike any we have seen for a long time. A crazy pattern of blizzards started the week before Christmas (documented in my blogs), and continued up to about the time February arrived. We had about an 8 day cycle we were stuck in for a good 7 or 8 weeks in a row. Each successive storm brought a little less intensity than the one before it, but nevertheless the mental anguish really took it's toll on the city.

Drivers became more and more impatient with each other as each week passed. People were completely worn out from shoveling, shoveling, and shoveling again. The streets were horrible with deep, damaging ice ruts (many still are). No trash service, no streets cleared for weeks. Floors and pants and socks and shoes were never clean or dry. We went out and got new tools for chipping ice. It had become a major expense to try to keep your car from looking like some sort of horrible piece of mud-art. People lost time at work. Many have yet to get those Christmas lights down.

Over the last week or so we have been blessed with some really beautiful weather, a glimpse of good old Denver. I have seen the attitudes go from "bad" to "a lot better" really quickly, especially with all the melting. The funny thing is, we really have just been spoiled over the last 10 years or so. These were the winters I remember from the early '90s when I moved here. I guess it's all just a minuscule drop in the bucket of time. I think sometimes Mother Nature just has to remind us who's really in charge!
